SKOG
The SKOG Reindeer Sanctuary

Not a farm.
Not a zoo.
A place to belong.

Our reindeer live at SKOG because they need us — some permanently, some temporarily. Here, they are cared for, respected and given the freedom to simply be reindeer.

01

Some need a little more help.

Some were abandoned or found lost. Some were too fragile to survive the Arctic alone. Others were born into human care and could never safely return to the wild.

During difficult winters, local reindeer herders may also bring fragile animals to SKOG for extra care and support.

Some stay. Some return.
Every one is cared for according to what they need.
02

A relationship built over generations.

Reindeer and people have shared the northern landscapes for centuries. They are deeply connected to Arctic life and Sámi heritage.

At SKOG, we try to respect that relationship. Our reindeer are not props, performers or attractions. They are individuals with their own personalities, boundaries and needs.

03

Meet the SKOG reindeer.

Eight reindeer. Eight very different personalities.

01

Mia

The Chill One

Mia spent her first winter at SKOG in 2026. She knows the place now and is wonderfully relaxed. SKOG is home — and she seems perfectly happy about it.

02

Laban

The Independent One

Laban was found as a young reindeer but was never bottle-fed. He is more cautious and prefers to keep a little distance from strangers.

Trust is earned.

03

Eliott

The Gentleman

Our oldest reindeer. Calm, gentle and bottle-fed, Eliott is incredibly comfortable around people. And he absolutely loves an ear scratch.

04

Theo

The 100 kg Toddler

Theo gets excited. Very excited. His favourite way of showing it is jumping around like a toddler — just one weighing around 100 kg.

05

Ailo

The Gentle Soul

Ailo is blind, but that never stopped him from being one of the kindest reindeer you will ever meet. He and Theo are inseparable and are almost always found together.

06

Anna

The Winter Spirit

White as fresh snow, Anna has a quiet, independent personality and keeps her distance from strangers.

But she never says no to a handful of lichen.

07

Elsa

The Sensitive One

Our beautiful white reindeer with distinctive brown patches. Elsa is more sensitive than the others and wears special eye protection to keep her eyes safe.

She simply needs a little extra care and patience.

08

Masken

The Little Wild Card

Masken is our little crazy boy. He lives with the females and has a very big personality for such a little troublemaker.

After a fight with another reindeer, he lost the sight on one side. Today, he takes life in his stride and is very much part of his little herd.

04

Reindeer with a purpose.

Reindeer are working animals, and when they are physically able, many enjoy having something to do.

That might mean joining us on an activity or taking a walk through the forest.

Not to perform.
To participate.
05

Let them show you their home.

When conditions allow, you may walk through the forest alongside one of our reindeer.

They know these paths better than we ever could. They can stop, explore, forage and simply enjoy being outside.

You are not taking them for a walk.
They are taking you into their world.

Care. Connection. Belonging.

At SKOG, caring for reindeer means more than providing food and shelter. It means understanding who they are, respecting their boundaries and giving them a life with companionship, purpose and dignity.
